TASDC TENNESSEE ASSOCIATION OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CHAIRS ***********************************************************************************
February 2, 1994
Dr. Dan A. Cross Chairman Division of Natural Science and Mathematics King College 1350 King College Road Bristol, TN 37620-2699
Dr. Cross,
Oliver Yates faxed me a copy of your January 25, 1994 letter regarding the TASDC resolution which deals with teaching loads for science faculty. I am pleased that the resolution can assist in your conversations with the administration concerning reasonable expectations for science faculty.
Please find enclosed a copy of our TASDC Bylaws, and membership information. I have taken the liberty of preparing a TASDC 1993-94 membership dues invoice for King College in the event you are, in fact, interested in institutional membership. Your participation is most welcome.
Should you have additional questions or require additional information you may contact either Oliver Yates at 615-269-100 ext. 2414 or me, Nancy Morris, at 615-741-3215 ext. 272. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Nancy G. Morris TASDC

Dr. Hal R. Ramer President Volunteer State Community College Nashville Pike Gallatin, TN 37066
Dr. Ramer,
The Tennessee Association of Science Department Chairs (TASDC) and the Tennessee Academy of Science (TAS) is sending the enclosed letter to all Presidents, Chancellors, Academic Officers, Faculty Council/Senate Speakers, and Science Department Chairs. The recommendation grows from study and debate over the past several years.
While I am in agreement with the recommendation, the maximum load recommended is directly applicable to the university and four year institutions where a teaching load of 12 hours is the norm. The recommendation does directly translate to the community college with regard to "establishing teaching load parity [in] contact hours of instruction among all faculty within a given institution." The interpretation for the community college would support and "move toward" parity with regard to the number of contact hours of instruction across the campus for all faculty -- regardless of the discipline in which the faculty member teaches.
The rationale for the recommendation is contained in the attached letter, but I am always available for discussion.
Sincerely,
Nancy G. Morris TASDC, Executive Committee
